What is Afro-Cuban Folklore?

Afro-Cuban folklore is one of the most important foundations of Cuban dance and music culture. It originates from African traditions that developed in Cuba over generations and became an integral part of Cuban identity.

It includes, among others, Yoruba traditions and Orisha dances, Palo Congo and Cuban Rumba. Each tradition has its own rhythm, character, energy, symbolism and distinctive way of using the body.

Afro-Cuban folklore is much more than dance. It teaches you to understand movement, rhythm, music and the cultural context behind much of today's Cuban dance expression.

Authentic experience, professional practice and dance education

Why learn with Hanser Estenoz?

Afro-Cuban folklore is not something I learned only in a dance school. It is part of the culture I grew up with.

BcA. Hanser Estenoz was born and raised in Havana and is the only Cuban instructor in Prague who regularly teaches Afro-Cuban folklore.

He studied and performed Afro-Cuban folklore professionally throughout his dance education and career. At the same time, he grew up in a family environment where Afro-Cuban cultural and religious traditions are a natural part of life.

His knowledge of Yoruba, Orishas, Palo Congo and other Afro-Cuban traditions therefore comes not only from professional dance training and choreography, but also from his own family and the Cuban cultural environment in which he grew up.

He studied dance for five years at the Escuela Nacional de Arte (ENA) in Havana and later graduated in Dance Pedagogy from HAMU in Prague.

His teaching combines authentic Cuban experience, professional dance practice and formal pedagogical education. You will learn not only the correct technique, but also the meaning, character and cultural context behind the movements and dances.
